entrepreneur who previously founded the backpack brand OGIO, kept noticing how outdated shoe entry felt, either bend over and lace up, or wear a slip-on that never quite fits snugly. He started working on the problem around 2009, filed the first patents in 2014, and launched Kizik's first hands-free shoe line in 2017 out of Lindon, Utah. The underlying innovation is a collapsible heel built from a specialized material engineered to compress when you step in and spring back into place around the foot, no bending, no touching, no laces to adjust. That technology, now backed by more than 170 patents, is licensed under Kizik's parent company, HandsFree Labs, which struck a technology deal with Nike in 2019, an early sign of just how validated the concept was within the industry.

How the Step-In Technology Actually Works

Unlike a standard slip-on that relies purely on elastic or a loose fit, Kizik's heel structure compresses under pressure as the foot enters, then locks back into shape to hold the foot securely, similar in principle to a shoe that ties itself without requiring hands. This is meaningfully different from a basic mule or backless shoe, since the fit stays snug through the day rather than loosening with movement.

More Than a Convenience Feature

What started as a solution for busy mornings has become something bigger for a lot of customers. Reduced mobility, pregnancy, arthritis, and other physical limitations that make bending down or lacing shoes difficult are part of why Kizik has built a following well beyond people who simply want to save a few seconds. The accessibility angle isn't an afterthought in the brand's marketing, it's central to why the technology matters.

Sneaker Styles Built Around the Technology

The Athens 2 is Kizik's flagship casual sneaker line, available across multiple colorways for men, women, and unisex sizing. The Lima offers a lighter, more minimal silhouette, while the London leans into a slightly more refined, streetwear-adjacent look.

Every Kizik Shoe Uses the Same Core Technology

Unlike brands that reserve a special feature for one flagship product, Kizik's entire lineup, sneakers, boots, and casual styles, runs on the same HandsFree Labs system. There's no tier where you're buying a "regular" shoe from this brand, the hands-free entry is the whole point across every style.

A Few Things Worth Knowing

  • Sizing tends to run true, though the compressible heel means the fit initially feels slightly different from a standard sneaker until you're used to stepping in rather than putting your foot in by hand

  • Several colorways here are marked down from original retail, worth checking availability since sale stock doesn't always restock

  • Free 2-3 day priority shipping applies across our women's slip ons collection
